Weather conditions did not permit the safe operation at sea nevertheless signal transmissions where performed from the pier using the Portable Acoustic Source Unit (PASU) and reception on the Subsurface Telemetry Unit (STU) 16 hydrophone vertical array. Initial results can be seen below.demodulated BPSK constellationdemodulated BPSK constellation

UAN10 - 10th of September

The weather permitted the deployment of the Subsurface Telemetry Unit with the 16 channel vertical hydrophone array, a Kongsberg Maritime Underwater Acoustic Modem and a 1km fiber optic and power cable connection to shore.

RV LeonardoRV LeonardoThe RV Leonardo arrives at Pianosa Island and performs unloading of various equipment for the experiments. The equipment is brought to the shore lab and testing and configurations are performed. The RV Leonardo also begins a bathymetric multi-beam survey in preparation for the deployment of the Subsurface Telemetry Unit fiber optic cable.FolagasFolagas

UAN Engineering Sea Trial - March10 - Part II - Faro Beach Lagoon

Engineering Sea Trial - Pier 2 Transmission

To complete missing events during the 17th of March experiment a second experiment was completed on the 19th of March at the Faro beach lagoon. The transmission was performed between two piers present at the lagoon, one was used for emission the other for the reception of signals. The two missing events (I and III) from part I were sucessfuly completed. Analysis of signals during the experiment and later at the lab showed that signals were correctly transmited and received. This event at the piers permitted the conclusion of the planned engineering test.

UAN Engineering Sea Trial - March10

Engineering Sea Trial VesselThe engineering sea trial took place on the 17th of March 2010. Scientific and technical personel were present from CINTAL, Kongsberg Maritime (KM) and ISME. The objectives included the deployment of the Subsurface Telemetry Unit (STU) and a KM-modem from vessel 1 and the transmission of signals using the Portable Acoustic Source Unit (PASU), Acoustic Emission Reception Unit (AERU) and ACU from vessel 2. A total of 3 events were planned but not all of these were completed due to technical problems on the reception equipment. The event regarding the testing of the KM-modems was successfully completed. Because of the incomplete signal acquisition which involved the STU system it was decided to repeat a part of the experiment as soon as possible so that signals can be acquired for analysis and further development of algorithms.
